Homemade Plantain Chips

One of my most favorite snacks is homemade plantain chips! Homemade plantain chips are easy to make and taste delicious! They make a great on-the-go snack and they are inexpensive too!

What are plantains?

Plantains look very much like a banana although they tend to be longer and bigger then the average banana. They are also starchier and less sweet then a banana. Traditionally, plantains are not eaten raw, but often cooked before being eaten. Due to not having a growing season, they are usually available year round. The plantain tree grows in moist, humid climates and produces bunches of 5-10 plantains.

They are a staple food in many of the countries in which they are grown. Did you know that plantains are actually the 10th most important staple food in the world? The color (ripeness) of the plantain usually determines how it is cooked. Green plantains are hard and not very sweet. These are best used for plantain chips or in recipes that call for unripe plantains. Yellow plantains are the mature form of a plantain and are sweeter. They are often fried or used for baking. Black plantains can still be used despite their color. Black plantains taste best when used in dessert  recipes.

Nutrition in Plantains

Homemade plantain chips are not only inexpensive, easy to make, and delicious, but they also have some health benefits!

  • Plantains are a good source of potassium and magnesium.
  • They also contain 35% of your daily Vitamin C  dose in one serving.
  • Plantains help regulate the digestive system.
  • They boost the immune system.
  • Plantains also promote healthy brain function.

Homade Garlic Plantain Chips

Recipe by The Pioneer Chicks
Author Alexa Lehr

Ingredients

  • 1 large, green plantain
  • 2 1/2 tblsp. organic coconut oil
  • garlic salt
  • garlic powder

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 300 degrees F. Wash your plantain. Using a sharp knife, cut the top and bottom off of the plantain and dice it into three sections. Cut the peel along the ridges of each section. Peel off the peel.
  • Install the 'fine slicing' blade into a food processor. Slice the plantain sections.
  • Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Lay out the plantain slices on the parchment paper. Make sure the slices do not touch.
  • Melt the coconut oil and drizzle it over the slices. Generously sprinkle the garlic salt and powder over the slices.
  • Place in the oven and bake for 30 minutes with 'speed bake' or convection turned on. The chips are done when they are crispy and just starting to turn golden brown.

Notes

Feel free to try your own flavorings if you are not a garlic fan! I have made mine spicy with cayenne pepper before and I have done plain sea salt before.
