Pumpkin pie is a delicious fall pie, but it’s not the traditional fall pie in my house. This grain-free sweet potato pie has the privilege of being the ultimate, long anticipated fall pie every year! While I think it makes a good pie for any time of the year, I mostly associate it with fall since it is similar to pumpkin pie and has all the traditional fall flavors. I love the smooth, creamy texture of this pie as well as it’s rich, delicious flavor! Wait until you try it!

Pioneer Recipe

Sweet potato pie is actually a pioneer recipe! I was doing some research on traditional American West recipes and I came across a website that had some chuckwagon recipes that have survived in pioneer cookbooks, journals, and memories. As I was scrolling through the different recipes, I was surprised to see sweet potato pie listed!

It seemed like the pioneers could pretty much turn anything into a pie. I even saw a pie recipe for red bean pie, pie made completely out of beans! There was also a mashed potato pie, so it made since that they would also make a sweet potato pie! Nevertheless, I was thrilled to see that one of my favorite pies of all time is actually a heritage, pioneer recipe!

Not only is this pie a traditional pioneer recipe, but it is also a modern pioneer recipe too! The ingredients may differ slightly from what the early pioneers would have had access to, but that’s okay. This pie is made to be allergy friendly, so even those modern pioneers with dietary restrictions can enjoy this classic pie! Sweet potato pie is…

  • gluten-free
  • grain-free
  • nut free
  • dairy-free
  • corn free
  • naturally sweetened

As if being allergy friendly wasn’t enough, this pie’s main ingredient is also bursting with nutrition. Sweet potatoes are a root vegetable belonging to the morning glory family. Like most vegetables, they also contain some great health benefits! Here are some nutrition facts about sweet potatoes.

  • They are one of the best sources of vitamin A.
  • They are very high in anti-oxidants.
  • Sweet potatoes contain good amounts of vitamin C and vitamin B6.
  • They are a strong anti-inflammatory food, which is good for folks with health issues caused by inflammation.
  • Sweet potatoes are 77% water!
  • They are a good source of potassium.
  • They contain a good amount of fiber.

Health Benefits of Sweet Potatoes

So, now that you know some of the nutritional information about sweet potatoes, what does all that information mean? Well, good news! It means this sweet potato pie is actually good for you and that you can have it for breakfast! Well, the breakfast part might be debatable, but if you live in my house, sweet potato pie is actually a pretty common breakfast food come November.

Either way, sweet potatoes do provide some great health benefits. Here are just a few:

  • Lower on the glycemic index than regular potatoes which means they won’t cause a blood sugar spike.
  • Improves the health of our eyes and skin because of it’s high vitamin A content.
  • Reduces cancer risks because of their high antioxidant levels.
  • They provide a third of your daily manganese which helps make collagen, an essential component for bone and joint health.
  • They are naturally anti-inflammatory and actually help reduce inflammation in the body.
  • The high fiber content of sweet potatoes helps you feel full and promotes good gut health.

While you may not get all those benefits directly from having a slice of sweet potato pie, you can at least rest assured that this pie is not an un-healthy addition to your diet.

Sweet Potato Fun Facts

Yeah, learning about health and wellness is interesting… to some people. But sometimes you just need some interesting tidbits instead of diving into how sweet potatoes benefit your diet. Don’t worry, I found some of those too! Here are some interesting sweet potato facts you can recite to anyone enjoying the sweet potato pie you make!

  • Sweet potatoes belong to the morning glory family, not the nightshade or yam family.
  • Certain varieties of sweet potatoes have different flesh colors. A few colors include: cream, white, yellow, orange, pink and purple.
  • There are over 400 different varieties of sweet potatoes.
  • The U.S. commercially grows about 1 million sweet potatoes each year.
  • China grows roughly 80 million tons of sweet potatoes each year.

Recipe Tips

Grain-free sweet potato pie is a super easy pie to make! I enjoy making this pie, it’s very relaxing and rewarding in the end! The recipe is pretty straight forward and I have been using this recipe every since I started making sweet potato pie (thanks to Duck Dynasty, who first introduced me to sweet potato pie). Here are a few recipe tips that will ensure your pie turns out perfectly!

  • Room temperature eggs work the best! They incorporate into the filling mixture better to make for a smooth, creamy filling.
  • You can use raw honey instead of maple syrup, however, I enjoy the flavor results that maple syrup produces and it is a healthier sugar to bake with.
  • Feel free to adapt the spice amounts to your liking! I prefer to go heavy on the cinnamon and less on the ginger.
  • For the butter in this recipe, any dairy-free substitute can be used as long as it can be melted. Coconut oil is a good option.
  • You can use any dairy-free milk substitute in this pie. I have made it with both oat milk and coconut milk, and it turns out perfect every time! The pie can be made with coconut milk from a can or from a carton.
  • If you use coconut milk from a can and include the coconut cream that gathers on top, the pie will be thicker than if you use the coconut milk from a carton that does not have cream.
  • Make sure the filling mixture is not too runny. It should be semi pourable and not runny. If you think your filling is too thin, add more sweet potato or add 2-3 tablespoons of tapioca flour.
  • For a grain-free pie crust option, check out these two recipes: Grain-free Pie Crust Recipes. I prefer the heartier pie crust for this sweet potato pie, but the pastry crust would work too.
